In 1955 Mrs Vera Gilbert called a meeting to establish a company to perform opera in Dunedin. In 1956 the Dunedin Opera Company was formed, and continues as the longest standing Opera Company in New Zealand. The company will celebrate its 50th year of operation in 2006.
The Dunedin Opera Company has managed to perform one and sometimes two, operas almost every year since 1956, and it has been the ‘home company’ of many of New Zealand’s outstanding singers, including Christopher Doig, Vincente Major, Kathleen Craig, and Jonathon Lemalu. The 2005 Lexus Song Quest final had two singers (Penny Muir and Robert Tucker) who have performed on the Opera Otago stage more than once.
